Exploring the dynamic world of politics can be an exhilarating experience, especially when you have the opportunity to shadow a Member of Parliament. Recently, I had the chance to shadow an MP in Parliament and it was an insightful journey into the heart of advocacy and campaigning volunteering.
A Day in Parliament
With a keen interest in political processes, I eagerly accepted the invitation to shadow an MP. The experience was not just educational but also an eye-opener into how deeply involved MPs are in civic engagement. The day began with a guided tour of the iconic Houses of Parliament, a majestic building bustling with MPs, staff, and school children.
One of the highlights was attending a meeting with the Campaign to Protect Rural England, which provided a glimpse into the intricate workings of social work volunteering and advocacy efforts. These discussions underscored the importance of networking and relationship building in political spheres.
Immersive Encounters
Lunch at the House of Commons canteen was an experience in itself, with House of Commons-branded memorabilia to take home. I also participated in opening letters and office work, which are crucial aspects of project management and organization in a political office.
Witnessing the Treasury Questions in the House of Commons was another unforgettable moment. Watching MPs like Keith Vaz, Andy Burnham, and Sadiq Khan in action made me feel part of the political inner circle.
A Surreal Encounter
The day culminated in a chance meeting with former Prime Minister Gordon Brown. This unexpected encounter was the cherry on top of an already thrilling day. His presence reminded me of the impact and reach of political figures, inspiring me to engage more deeply in civic activities.
Final Thoughts
For anyone interested in politics or related fields, practical experience is invaluable. Work experiences like these can enhance skills in project management, fundraising, and advocacy, while also contributing significantly to areas like homelessness and poverty.
