The Power of Speech: Harnessing Technology for Greater Impact
“Here I am, brain the size of a planet, and they ask me to pick up a piece of paper.” This quote from Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy inspired my reflections this week. It’s fascinating to consider that the smartphone in my pocket is more powerful than the technology that propelled humanity to the moon. No, I’m not carrying a device for destruction—just my BlackBerry.
It’s humbling to realize that our smartphones have more computational power than the computers of the Apollo space missions. Imagine if an alien landed in Westminster tomorrow; it might assume we use this power for grand purposes like designing skyscrapers or curing cancer. Yet, when equipped with the latest high-tech devices, what do we do? We text, flirt, and most importantly, we share our thoughts, often in 140 characters or less, with friends and strangers alike. This craving to share is akin to what spurred the ancient Egyptians to invent writing materials like papyrus.
The power of speech, now digitized and shared globally, can be a force for good. In the realm of Technology develop Digital Literacy, we have an opportunity to leverage our devices for positive change. By focusing on skills like Public Speaking & Presenting and Creativity & Innovation, we can transform communication into a tool for Human Rights advocacy and Entrepreneurship & Innovation.
