How Volunteering Transformed My Life: A Personal Journey

Volunteering at the Olympics

Participating in volunteering activities not only allows you to give back but also opens doors to personal growth and development. Two years ago, I embarked on an incredible journey with the Young Leaders Programme, which culminated in being part of the world’s greatest sporting spectacle at the London 2012 Olympics.

Volunteering: A Catalyst for Change

This summer was unforgettable, marked by my involvement with the Surrey hub of the Young Leaders Programme. Together with an amazing team, we made a positive impact through community projects inspired by Olympic and Paralympic values. From intergenerational board games to an Olympic-themed mural, our initiatives brought people together.

Working alongside athletes from the Dame Kelly Holmes Legacy Trust, our efforts promoted the London 2012 games and culminated in the unique opportunity to serve as a Games Maker.

Where Magic Happens

Walking into the stadium on my first day was a moment of magic. The sight was overwhelming, and the emotional impact unparalleled. As a Games Maker, my role involved welcoming visitors, providing information, scanning tickets, and ensuring everyone had a memorable experience.

I collaborated with a diverse group of talented individuals, including athletes, fellow Games Makers, and military personnel, all united in their dedication to making a difference. Every moment was cherished, and the experience left a lasting impact on my life.

Highlights and Learnings

Memorable highlights included holding a gold medal, witnessing Tom Daley’s performance, attending the Paralympic opening ceremony as a VIP guest, and seeing Usain Bolt in action. This experience instilled confidence and equipped me with valuable skills such as networking, budgeting, and event organization.

Volunteering not only changed my life but also paved the way for future opportunities. It helped me achieve my goal of attending university and securing a job as a chalet host for the ski season. Encouraged by this journey, I plan to continue volunteering during my sports degree, working with schools and sports clubs.
