Elena Ewence

How Does It Feel to Be Our Volunteer of the Month?

“It’s so hard to put into words! I’m really happy to be nominated,” Elena shares, expressing her joy at being recognized for her contributions.

A Glimpse into Elena’s Volunteering Journey

Elena volunteers weekly at the Switch Youth Cafe and three times a week at Bubbles Swim Club, a place dedicated to offering swimming lessons to children who struggle with mainstream lessons. Additionally, she plays a vital role as a Deputy Member of the Kent Youth County Council and serves as the stand-in chair for the Maidstone Youth Forum.

Memorable Volunteering Moments

One of Elena’s standout experiences was organizing the “Switch on the Music” event in Maidstone, now in its 15th year. “Everything from securing funding to creating posters was part of the process,” she explains. “We had eight live bands and karaoke - it was a fantastic event planned over six months. Hard work truly pays off!”

Elena fondly recalls a parent’s invitation to a birthday party of a child she works with at Bubbles Swim Club, and the joy it brought. Another cherished memory is attending the Kent Charity Awards night after Switch Youth Cafe was nominated.

Skills Gained Through Volunteering

“I’ve gained a lot of organizational and time-management skills. My team-working and communication skills have really developed,” Elena notes. “Everything I do involves talking to people.”

Why Volunteer?

“I’d probably spend more time with friends, read more, and laze around if I didn’t volunteer,” Elena admits. “I love volunteering; it makes me feel good about contributing to society. I enjoy staying busy and making things happen.”

Future Aspirations

Elena aspires to help others on a larger scale, possibly as a politician or human rights lawyer. “Volunteering is great for gaining valuable experience and enhancing my CV,” she says.

A Word of Thanks

“A massive thank you! It’s great to be recognized for what I do,” Elena expresses her gratitude to those who nominated her.
