International Women’s Day: Celebrating Empowerment and Gender Equality
International Women’s Day (IWD) is a pivotal moment to celebrate women’s achievements and advocate for gender equality. As we lace up our marching boots on this special day, the global community comes together to champion women’s rights and highlight ongoing inequalities.
My Journey to India and Volunteering
In 2005, my perspective on IWD transformed when I found myself marching through the streets of India, advocating for women’s rights with fervor. I had been volunteering with a grassroots organization in Tamil Nadu, South India, assisting in children’s homes and contributing to impactful community projects.
These projects included supporting women and girls in launching small businesses, empowerment programs for those facing domestic violence, and critical health initiatives like HIV and TB prevention. It was fulfilling work that underscored the power of volunteering in international aid and human rights.
The Impact of the 2005 Rally
The rally on March 8, 2005, was more than a march—it was a platform for those facing double discrimination due to poverty and gender. I met many inspiring women: Suganya, a young woman aspiring to attend university, Venda, a single mother striving against societal ostracism, and Rita, a tireless advocate for domestic violence survivors.
Their stories are a testament to the ongoing struggle for gender equality and the resilience of women worldwide. Recent events remind us of the challenges young women face, including underrepresentation in leadership roles and vulnerabilities to violence.
Get Involved and Make a Difference
The memories of my 2005 IWD experience remain vivid, reflecting the meaningful connections made through volunteering. For those eager to contribute to gender equality, even small actions can make a significant impact.
