What It Was Like to Be on BBC Radio 1
As part of BBC Radio 1’s inaugural Local Hero Week, our very own vTiger was invited to discuss the joys of volunteering on The Surgery. This event took place from April 18th to 25th and aimed to highlight various volunteering opportunities. To give you an insider’s perspective, here’s a recount of the experience:
“Imagine sitting in a basement near Oxford Circus on a Sunday evening, discussing volunteering with Aled and Alexandra Burke. As we went live on Radio 1, messages poured in, and I had to maintain my composure while addressing inquiries about volunteering opportunities in fashion.
Last Sunday’s Surgery show is one of my cherished experiences. How did it happen? Well, discussions between our team, Radio 1, and VSO led to the idea of a Local Hero week. Initially, I was unsure about Westwood leading the event, but he exceeded expectations, supporting good causes and showing the fun in volunteering with celebrities like Scott Mills, Chipmunk, and Alexandra.
The Local Hero week left a lasting impression on Westwood. His story about Henrietta the pig was heartfelt, and it was touching to see the event’s impact. Despite stumbling on my final questions, I cherished every moment. If you ever get the opportunity to be on a radio show, seize it!
Before the show, I spoke with the production team and Aled. Many of us had radio experience from volunteering, including my time at Southampton University’s SURGE FM. Little did I know those skills would resurface on a live Radio 1 show! Viva volunteering!”
