What The Dark Knight and Volunteers Have in Common

Not all heroes wear a cape & mask

Apart from being yet another great addition to the already successful franchise, there are some timely moral questions within The Dark Knight Rises.

What does the film also tell us about the nature of volunteers?

Last week, I was fortunate enough to attend the premiere of The Dark Knight Rises at the IMAX cinema. The film highlights the need for clean renewable energy and the importance of not neglecting the less privileged young—two key themes at its moral heart.

So, what lessons can volunteers take from Batman’s altruistic ethos?

Here are my top 5 shared traits between Batman and volunteers—traits we could all adopt to make the world a little better.

1: Batman Never Gives Up

It’s easy to feel defeated when a job application is rejected or grades fall short. However, like Batman, resilience and staying positive are crucial. “Being defeated is only temporary. Giving up is what makes it permanent!”

2: Batman Feels Responsible

While many recognize societal ills, few take action. Batman, like volunteers, always feels responsible. Imagine a world where 7 billion people felt this way—volunteers can.

3: Batman Doesn’t Look for Praise

Both Batman and volunteers work tirelessly to improve lives without seeking recognition. Volunteers are society’s true heroes in disguise.

4: Batman Embraces Technology

With the help of Lucius Fox, Batman uses technology to make Gotham safer. Similarly, volunteers utilize the internet and social media to make positive changes. Check out our take on What The Dark Knight and volunteers have in common.

5: Batman Is Just Bad-Ass!

Like Batman, volunteers give their time, concentration, and determination—their most valuable attributes—to make the world better.
