Volunteer Playworkers wanted based in Chalk Farm NW1

Closing for application : 19 Sep 2026

We are looking for volunteer playworkers to help us run an in-house afterschool club for children and their families.

Age: 18 - 80
When: Weekdays
Where: Onsite

CARIS Families is a small charity that was founded in November 2016. We support homeless families living in temporary accommodation in the London Borough of Camden and Hackney. We run an After-School Club (Kids Club) for children aged 16 and under, living in one of Camden Council’s hostels in NW1.
We are looking for enthusiastic volunteers (18+) to help us run the After School club (Kids Club) and possibly support/accompany us on occasional days, during the school holidays when we run our enrichment trips from both Camden and Hackney.

Kids Club
-          Our Club runs from the hostel’s basement, from 4 – 6.00pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays term-time only (the volunteering shift runs from 3.45 – 6.15pm).
-          Kids Club offers play, art and craft activities to the resident children and a socialising space and pastoral support to their parents, who (if their child/ren are aged 5 or under) are required to be on-site.
-          We also run enrichment trips during the school holidays from a hostel in Hackney (Finsbury Park) as well as Camden.

You don’t need experience of working with children to apply, but you will need to be:
Free to volunteer at least once a fortnight, for a minimum of six-eight sessions.

What will I be doing?
Happy to get stuck in with play activities, arts and crafts and snack preparation at the afterschool club, as the session requires.

  • Understanding of and empathetic towards the difficulties faced by children and their parents living in hostel accommodation, as they wait for a suitable home to become available.

  • Help us tidy up after a session has finished.

  • Working as part of a team, supporting the weekly program of play/learning opportunities the Play and Learning Coordinators have created.

  • Understanding of- and empathetic towards the difficulties faced by children and their parents living in hostel accommodation, as they wait for a suitable home to become available.

  • Willing to undergo an Enhanced Disclosure criminal record check and a short child safeguarding course (both of which will be organised and paid for by CARIS Families)
