We are looking for friendly, curious and caring volunteers to support community workshops taking place primarily in Oadby & Wigston, North West Leicestershire & Hinckley. Join us in creating welcoming spaces where participants can explore museum objects, share their experiences, take part in creative activities, and connect with others.

About this Opportunity

Help people share their stories, explore local heritage, and discover what it means to belong. Leicestershire is shaped by generations of movement, migration, and settlement. Making Leicestershire My Home is a new cultural outreach programme that uses museum collections, creativity, and conversation to explore stories of home, belonging, and connection across the county.

This is a fantastic opportunity to handle Leicestershire’s historic collections, meet people from diverse backgrounds, and reveal unheard stories that deserve to be celebrated.

You do not need experience. Please share with us areas of personal interest, knowledge or experience that you want to develop or bring to the role so we can craft and enriching and meaningful role with you that supports the workshops in being more engaging, accessible and inclusive in your application.

If you enjoy meeting people, listening to their stories, and helping people feel included, we would love to hear from you. You will receive training and support, develop new skills, gain experience in community engagement and cultural outreach, and enjoy behind-the-scenes opportunities within the heritage and cultural sector.


What you will be doing

  • Interact with people to share your knowledge & enthusiasm for the ‘Making Leicestershire My Home‘ project
  • Using object handling to spark conversations around belonging, home and connections to Leicestershire
  • Be there for people. Proactively looking out for those who need assistance or guidance
  • Supporting creative activity such as story writing, poetry and drawings about the objects drawn from peoples personal stories
  • Helping to shape workshops and future activities via debrief and feedback after each session
  • Join the team in making sure all areas are clean and tidy, ensuring all spaces are welcoming, safe and ready for participants
  • Engaging with the participants, helping them to delve deeper into activities

The skills you need

  • Willing to travel within Leicestershire.
  • Willing to undertake training to help carry out this role.
  • Interested in people and hearing their stories.
  • An interest in accessibility and creating inclusive environments.
  • Willingness to communicate with others, share knowledge and have curiosity for the stories of people who have made Leicestershire their home.
  • Actively listen to others with empathy.
  • Friendly, approachable and happy to work within a team.
  • A willingness to create safe, inclusive, and welcoming environments for participants from diverse backgrounds and approach sensitive topics tactfully.
  • The role is be limited to over 16s.
