Help us redistribute food to local communities in the North West
Volunteering takes place at our warehouse in Eccles, this is where food comes in from our partners and we select the stock and load the vans ready to go out into the community.
About this Opportunity
The Bread & Butter Thing makes life more affordable for people on low incomes. We rescue surplus food and redistribute to low-income communities, helping build stronger community bonds, whilst reducing food waste and CO2 emissions. Our award-winning mobile food clubs allow people to feed themselves and their families an affordable healthier, more nutritious diet.
Volunteering takes place at our warehouse in Eccles, this is where food comes in from our partners and we select the stock and load the vans ready to go out into the community. Activities on the day can vary but could include helping to date check and consolidate the stock, sort food to go out to each hub, break down large crates of vegetables or bag pack for individual hubs.
Please wear warm comfy layered clothing, as you’ll get warm and need to cool down; wear sturdy footwear, and feel free bring any snacks or refreshments you like.
We can take teams of up to 20 at our Manchester warehouse, so if you have colleagues who you’d like to join you let us know and we can always set up a day especially for you.

About the Organisation
The Bread and Butter Thing
A unique infrastructure which brings people in low-income areas together, developing individual and community resilience.
We tackle premiums that such families face everywhere and the in-built social inequalities that come with them. Our model is a combination of direct delivery and regional/national policy work, learning from communities and using that learning to improve the policy environment.We address systemic failures affecting these communities: 1) reduction in community cohesion as society provides fewer reasons to come together 2) reduction in the availability of healthy food as the commercial sector withdraws 3) retreat to remote support increasing digital exclusion.The BMJ and CPAG amongst others have shown that Covid disproportionately affected our communities. There is a policy focus on extreme hunger and poverty accounting for 4% of the UK. Yet there are 21% who are ‘just about managing’ and struggling to access a healthy diet. TBBT’s model uniquely addresses this population at scale.We are an early adopter of the Food Ladder Strategy and use our experience as a trailblazer in this area to inform and complement national-level campaigns, whilst giving people a leg up onto the next rung.From its set-up in 2016, TBBT has grown to serving 158 communities and over 10,000 families every week, with 1000 locally-based volunteers and over 120,000 members.
