5 Ways to Get Involved in Politics

Engaging Young People in Civic Engagement

If we’ve learned anything from recent elections, it’s this: young people care about politics. The Team v Swing The Vote campaign successfully mobilized 18-25-year-olds, with 84 Team v Leaders across the UK engaging over 2,300 individuals through more than 90 community workshops. Reports following the election revealed a significant increase in registration and turnout among 18-24-year-olds (source) (source). However, youth engagement in politics shouldn’t end here.

Here’s our top five ways to stay involved:

1. Join a Political Party

Whether your aim is to support the newly elected government or to rally against it, joining a political party is an excellent way to stay engaged. You’ll have the opportunity to meet like-minded individuals and potentially support local election campaigns.

2. Fight for a Cause You Care About

World peace? Tuition fees? Equal pay? Whatever cause you are passionate about, get involved. Attend marches, rallies, or create a petition. The options are endless, and you’ll meet many people who share your passion.

3. Use the Power of Social Media

If traditional protesting isn’t your style, consider using social media to spread awareness. Tweet about issues you care about, share petitions, or write a blog. Social media is a powerful tool for advocacy without the need for a placard.

4. Write to Your MP

By writing to or emailing your MP, you can place issues on their agenda. MPs are elected to serve you and must reply to your letters, provided you include your address. Discover who your MP is at They Work For You and start writing!

5. Volunteer

While volunteering isn’t directly political, it demonstrates your commitment to the community and helps you understand local issues. Explore the diverse volunteering opportunities available in your area. Find amazing opportunities here.
