Climate Week: 5 Top Environmental Tips!
How often do you recycle or switch off a lightbulb when you leave a room? If you’re anything like me, then perhaps not enough. Little actions like these can make a massive difference. Did you know that the average household in the UK creates around 5.5 tonnes of CO2 per year? That’s a significant amount of CO2—enough to fill a hot air balloon! Aside from caring for the environment, saving energy can also save you money. In fact, the average UK household spends £1,200 per year on fuel and power.
Why am I discussing this now, you might ask? Well, next week marks Climate Week, a national event aimed at raising awareness and helping combat climate change in the UK. Thousands of businesses, schools, and councils will run events during Climate Week from 21-27 March 2011, sharing ideas and encouraging action. To mark Climate Week, we’ve put together a collection of great green volunteering opportunities so that you too can get involved and help make England a greener place!
Participating in Climate Week doesn’t require much time—every little bit helps. Here are a few quick and easy energy-saving tips to get you started:
-
Light Bulbs: Did you know that fluorescent bulbs use only a quarter of the energy regular bulbs use? While these bulbs may be more expensive initially, they last much longer and save energy and money in the long run.
-
Containers: As simple as it sounds, reusing containers can save energy and money. Instead of buying new containers or discarding old ones, reuse packaging from other products. Wash out old glass jars and save boxes—you’ll be surprised at how many uses you can find for them.
-
Donate: Done with old clothes or goods? Donate them to a friend or a local organization. Avoid creating more waste when someone else might need them!
-
Water: When washing up or brushing your teeth, remember to turn the water off. Simple actions like this can save a significant amount of water. Additionally, opt for showers instead of baths, as baths use more water.
-
Electrical Equipment: Many people leave electronics like TVs and DVD players on standby overnight or while they’re out. You can save a substantial amount of electricity by taking a moment to switch them off.
