vInspired’s Perspective on Labour’s Proposed Changes to Jobseekers Allowance

vInspired presents a critical perspective on Labour’s proposed amendments to Jobseekers Allowance (JSA) for young people. In light of Labour’s plans to cut benefits for those not engaged in training courses, our approach emphasizes the multifaceted barriers youth face in securing employment.

Understanding Youth Unemployment

While training is a vital element in tackling youth unemployment, it is not the sole solution. Many young people encounter various hurdles, such as a lack of relevant work experience and limited job opportunities. According to a recent survey involving 1,000 young individuals, a significant number reported that their qualifications were often undervalued by potential employers.

At vInspired, we believe in recognizing the diverse paths to employment that young people can take. Overemphasizing training alone might not adequately address the challenges faced by those who already possess qualifications or who need a more integrated approach to employment.

A Comprehensive Approach to Employment

Labour’s new policy stipulates that 18 to 21-year-olds will only qualify for JSA if they hold a Level 3 qualification (equivalent to one A-Level). Those lacking this qualification must agree to undertake a training course to receive benefits. Furthermore, JSA will now be means-tested for young people, excluding those whose parental income exceeds £42,000.

We advocate for a more comprehensive approach that includes entrepreneurship initiatives and addresses the unique aspirations of young individuals. Our aim is to close the skills gap with varied opportunities and help young people achieve their full potential in the job market.
