Volunteer of the Month - March 2015
Meet March’s Volunteer of the Month, 17-year-old Josh Henry
Josh has already received a v10 and v50 award and has volunteered over 120 hours at Seaford Musical Theatre Juniors. His hard work and determination earned him a letter of recognition from Prime Minister David Cameron.
Tell me about the volunteering you’ve done at Seaford Musical Theatre.
The majority of my work at the theatre involves teaching young people aged 5-18 the techniques to be on stage as well as helping them gain life skills like confidence, creativity, and consideration for others. I’ve also worked as front of house manager, stage manager, light and sound technician, painted sets and the stage, been on stage performing, and even sold ice creams! Behind the scenes and production have always interested me.
In October 2013, I was approached by the Director of Seaford Musical Theatre Juniors and asked if I wanted to take up the role as Junior Director. My first role was to audition the rest of the cast of GREASE with our Musical Director. We’re currently preparing everything for the opening night of our latest show, The Little Mermaid, so I’m busy making sure people know their lines, designing programmes, posters, and the sets.
Why did you receive a letter from David Cameron?
The letter thanked me for volunteering my time and congratulated me for doing such fantastic work. Hearing something like this from someone so important was really powerful.
How does it feel to be recognised as a Volunteer of the Month?
To be recognised for what you do because you enjoy it is an incredible feeling and just motivates you so much. Seeing the smile on the kids’ faces at the start of every lesson makes it extra worthwhile.
What would you like to say to Paula Woolven who nominated you for this award?
There are no words I can say to Paula that do justice to how inspirational she is. Thank you for everything Paula! You’ve taught me some vital life lessons which I will carry through the rest of my life, and I’m not the only one. You have helped people overcome depression, anxiety and just build confidence. So on behalf of everyone at Seaford Musical Theatre Juniors, thank you!
“Josh’s positive attitude makes him an excellent role model for other members and I have no hesitation in recommending him for this award.” - Paula Woolven, Director at the Seaford Musical Theatre Juniors.
