Volunteering with Refugees in the Calais Jungle

It seems a day doesn’t pass without the refugee crisis making headlines. The media often shows the dire living conditions in refugee camps and the faces of those yearning for freedom.

What Can You Do?

If you’re a young person in the UK, you might wonder, “What can I do?” Here’s the inspiring story of someone who turned that question into action.

“No one leaves home unless home is the mouth of a shark.” — Warsan Shire

This quote encapsulates the desperation driving many refugees. One individual, a Mental Health nursing student, found herself moved to act after reading dehumanizing headlines about migrants. Determined to channel her emotions constructively, she connected with groups and initiated a successful campaign in collaboration with CalAid.

A University Campaign Takes Shape

The campaign involved collecting tents, clothes, sleeping bags, and other essentials from students to send to the Calais camp. The response was overwhelming, with local media coverage prompting a generous outpouring of donations from the community.

Our storeroom filled up rapidly, and volunteers were called to help sort and load the donations. By September, two vans loaded with essentials were delivered to the CalAid warehouse for distribution in Calais.

Volunteering in the Warehouse

Volunteers sorted blankets and coats tirelessly. Despite the exhausting work, the camaraderie and shared purpose created a vibrant atmosphere. A memorable moment was discovering a note saying “good luck” in a donated coat, highlighting the kindness of those contributing.

Taking the Next Step: Volunteering in Calais

Inspired by the warehouse experience, the student decided to volunteer directly in Calais. The camp, referred to as “the Jungle,” starkly contrasts with its surroundings, housing about 5,500 individuals, including women and children.

The medical team worked with limited resources, tending to injuries and illnesses with donated supplies. Despite the challenges, the experience was enriching, providing a deeper understanding of the refugees’ plight.

Why You Should Volunteer Too

Volunteering in “the Jungle” was rewarding and offered a new perspective on life and the refugee crisis. The sense of community among volunteers was uplifting and inspiring. There are numerous roles you can take on, both in the UK and Calais, from teaching and cooking to sorting donations.
