Your Role in Creating Change
This rewarding volunteering opportunity would suit anyone wishing to pursue a career in the health sector, or anyone from the community wishing to support people with serious illness.
As a member of the Empowered Living Team, the volunteer’s role would be to assist in the delivery of therapy to patients in Newham, Tower Hamlets and City & Hackney, to enable them to live their lives with as much independence and quality of life as is possible.
Tasks can include:
- Supervising a patient to do an exercise programme or practise physical activities
- Talking to patients about some of their worries, concerns, or thoughts
- Providing a patient with massage/relaxation

- Approachable, friendly, and able to get on well with people of different backgrounds
- Caring and committed to helping improve patients’ quality of life
- Able to work in a professional manner with patients who have a terminal illness
- Enthusiastic to learn and practise new skills
- Reliable and flexible
Skills you can develop:
- Breathlessness management
- Rehabilitation in Palliative Care and mobility rehabilitation
- The confidence to visit patients in their own homes
- How to communicate effectively
- How to handle difficult and challenging situations
- Psychological support and emotional resilience
- How to perform a gentle arm and hand massage routine
This role requires you:
- To be 18+
- To be able to supply the details of two referees
- To be willing to apply for an Enhanced Adult DBS certificate with St. Joseph’s Hospice (unless you are subscribed to the Update Service)
- To complete an interview
- To attend two days Empowered Living training and one day Core training
- To commit to a minimum of 2 hours per week for at least 6 months

St Joseph’s Hospice looks after and supports people over 18 years of age with incurable life limiting conditions. We aim to help people to ‘live’ with their illness as comfortably and independently as they can. We also aim to support friends, families and carers who may also be affected by an individual's illness.
