This Month’s Star Volunteer

This month’s star volunteer, Alfie Button, showcases how rewarding volunteering can be, regardless of age. Our blogger discovered more about this determined 14-year-old’s journey.

Alfie was nominated for his volunteering with the Sea Cadets. He’s logged 100 hours and earned his v10, v50, and v100 awards!

Congratulations Alfie - How Long Have You Been Volunteering with the Sea Cadets?

For five years, and it has taken me four years to work my way up to my current role. As a Senior Team member, I lead a team of 5-15 people. I also recruit new cadets and involve the team in volunteer opportunities within the Cadets.

How Did You First Get Involved?

I joined because I had family who were in the Army and Cadets. I really enjoy it although it does take up your time. I have learned that good things can come from it, and I would not change what I do. I am really happy and pleased to work with great people.

How Much of Your Time Does It Take Up?

I usually volunteer twice a week for about five hours. Through this, I logged my hours and got all my vInspired Awards - so I was really happy with that!

Did You Have Any Idea the Sea Cadets Had Nominated You for Volunteer of the Month?

No, but when I was told I had won, I was really shocked. It was very unexpected, but at the same time, it was a nice surprise. It’s nice to know you’re appreciated for the work you do.

How Would You Encourage More People Your Age to Volunteer?

It takes time, but give it a go. Keep trying different opportunities until you find one you really enjoy. Volunteering can be so rewarding, help you gain vInspired Awards, and bring other opportunities your way.

“Alfie is a very dedicated young volunteer. It is quite unbelievable that he is only 14 years old! He has spent a significant amount of time working with other young people, passing on his skills in different water sports.” — Daniel Chan, Sea Cadets.

Log your hours and take part in the vInspired Awards like Alfie - make your good deeds count.
