Make the Team

A 2010 campaign with the Premier League that asked football fans aged 16 to 25 to volunteer at their local club, with match tickets to be won.

What it was

Make the Team was a campaign the charity ran in the autumn of 2010 with the Premier League, to persuade football fans aged 16 to 25 to volunteer in their local communities, at their local club above all. On The Wight put it plainly at the time: “Volunteering at your local football club offers you a chance to really get involved with the game that you love, even if you don’t play it yourself.” The roles ranged from tannoy announcer to coaching to writing the club blog, and anyone who signed up went into a draw for Premier League tickets.

What it did

The campaign was backed by David Seaman and Kieran Gibbs, with radio adverts voiced by Martin Tyler, Andy Gray and Chris Kamara on Choice, Galaxy, Capital and XFM, and it put hundreds of football-related roles on vinspired.com, “whether you’ve got one minute, one day or one week to spare”.

What happened

Make the Team was a single season’s campaign. Its addresses are still linked from football blogs of the time, which is why this page exists. The roles it advertised have long expired; the clubs still need people.

Do this today

Sports clubs still need volunteers, from coaching to match day roles. The sports and recreation page lists the roles open now, and the hours count towards awards.
