About volunteering in Liverpool
Liverpool’s community organisations are notably long lived. Many of the food banks, community centres and youth projects operating today grew out of local campaigns and mutual aid going back decades, and they carry that history. Volunteering with one of them tends to mean joining something with a settled way of doing things and a core of people who have been there a long time, which is reassuring if you have never volunteered before.
The city’s cultural sector is the other major draw. Liverpool’s museums, galleries and waterfront attractions take on front of house, collections and events volunteers, and the roles are genuinely useful experience for anyone considering heritage, tourism or arts administration as a career. They also tend to come with proper training, which is not true everywhere.
Merseyside’s geography matters when you are choosing. Can I volunteer at Liverpool’s museums and galleries?
Yes, and the city has more of that work than most places its size. Front of house, visitor welcome, collections and events roles come up regularly, usually with training provided and a commitment of one day or half day a week.
Do I need experience to start volunteering?
Almost never. Most organisations are looking for reliability and interest rather than a background in the work, and they will show you what to do. If a role does need a specific skill or a DBS check, it says so on the listing.
How much time do I have to give?
