About volunteering in Sheffield
Sheffield’s relationship with its landscape shapes its volunteering. The city has thousands of hectares of woodland, five river valleys and a national park inside its boundary, and the groups that look after all of that are volunteer led. Practical conservation days are the classic Sheffield first role: turn up on a Saturday, get shown how to use a bow saw, spend the morning clearing scrub and go home muddy. No experience needed and no long term commitment asked.
The city also has a strong tradition of community organising in its estates, which is where the food banks, pantries and family support projects live. Sheffield’s hills mean neighbourhoods can feel genuinely separate from one another, so these organisations are hyper local and depend on people from the same few streets. If you live in one of them, you are more useful there than anywhere else in the city.
Between the two universities and the further education colleges, Sheffield has a large young population and a matching demand for mentors, tutors and youth workers.
