Every organisation has people who have moved on. Students who finished sixth form, volunteers who moved town, members whose season ended. Most systems offer two options for them: keep them as members, with everything that implies, or delete them and lose the relationship. An alumni group is the third option.
An alumni group is a group with one setting turned on, Follow only. Adding a person to it ends their membership of your organisation straight away and turns the relationship into a follow. They are no longer on your roster, no longer in your groups, and no longer someone you approve hours for. They still follow you, so your public posts and opportunities reach their feed, and the record they built with you stays on their profile, verified, exactly as it was.
The safeguarding line is deliberate and it is the feature, not a limitation. A leaver in an alumni group has no route to your current volunteers. There is no members list they can read, no message they can send through the group, and no way back into the roster without your approval. A school can keep a connection with the people it helped without opening a door between former students and current ones.
The record is the point. A person who gave you a year of their time should not lose the proof of it because the year ended. Hours you approved stay approved. Certificates they earned stay earned. What changes is only the relationship going forward, and that change is one tick box.
Because a follow is a plain, public relationship, nothing about an alumni group needs a separate plan or a separate charge. It is part of groups on every level.

Create the group
In your organisation's groups, add a group and turn on Follow only. Name it whatever your organisation calls the people who moved on.

Add the leavers
One at a time or as the year ends. Each person's membership ends the moment they are added, and the follow begins.

Keep in touch, carefully
Your public posts and opportunities reach their feed. Their record stays theirs, and current volunteers are never visible to them.

What happens to a person's hours when they join an alumni group?
Nothing. Every hour you approved stays approved on their record, and every badge and certificate stays earned. Only the membership ends.
Can alumni see or contact current volunteers?
No. An alumni group has no members list to read and no message route through it. Leavers follow the organisation, not the people in it, and that is by design.
Can a person come back?
Yes, in the normal way. They apply or you add them again, and you approve it. The alumni group does not lock anyone out for good; it only ends the access they no longer need.
Does this cost anything?
No. It is a setting on a group, and groups are free on every level.
What does the leaver see?
Your public posts and opportunities in their feed, and their own record on their profile. They see nothing that was only for members.
